News from Daylight Solutions

Introducing the New Unicorn™ II Fixed-wavelength Lasers
Daylight Solutions has reinvented the fixed-wavelength laser.  The new Unicorn™ II series replaces our highly successful Unicorn™ line with improved pointing and wavelength stability.  At the time of manufacture, these lasers can be centered and locked down at any wavelength under the gain curve of one of the many chips we have developed.  For most wavelengths, the Unicorn™ II lasers ship with the capability to operate in both CW and pulsed modes.  Multi-spectral imaging, holography, and calibration procedures just got easier with economical access to the mid-IR.

Tuning Range Increase for Our CW-Pulsed Lasers

We have improved the quality of our laser chips and the precision of our manufacturing.  This translates into improved tuning specifications.  Many of our standard models can support broader tuning ranges than we have offered in the past (≥70 cm-1).  We now specify ≥120 cm-1 of tuning at 4.5 µm and ≥110 cm-1 at wavelengths in the 5-6 µm region.  Other tuning ranges have increased too.

Narrowly Tunable Laser Series

Sometimes there is too much of a good thing.  Perhaps you need some tunability, but 120 cm-1 is more than necessary.  We now offer a series of “narrowly tunable” products.  The NT series of lasers offer between 30 and 40 cm-1 of tuning at an intermediate price point.  Pick the performance you need: fixed-wavelength, narrowly tunable, increased standard tunable, or don’t forget our Über Tuner™ line of broadly tunable systems offering up to 350 cm-1 in a single-chip package.

New Wavelengths

People are continuously finding new ways to use collimated, narrow-linewidth, high-power laser light in the mid-IR.  In turn, we constantly release new wavelengths to meet our customers’ expanding needs.  We recently shipped the shortest wavelength commercial QCL to date at 3.55 µm.  We also have coverage at 3.8 and 4.3 µm.  The 4.3 µm laser is available in a mode hop-free configuration and is centered right on the CO2 absorption band.  The figure below shows almost 50 cm-1 of mode hop-free tuning with the CO2 absorption lines peaking through from a partially purged beam line.  That’s the CO2 band center at about 2345 cm-1.

So you see, there is something new for everyone from Daylight Solutions: The Source for All Applications in the Mid-IR.  For further information, you can contact Chris Armacost, Ed Tochikubo, or myself.  Or visit us at FACSS, booth #37 at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, NV from 2 to 7 October 2011.  See you there.

New Monoclonal Antibodies to Chikungunya Virus

Chikungunya virus can be found in tropical Asia and Africa. It typically causes a 2-3 day fever sometimes with an associated rash. Arthritic pain in the joints and limbs often follows and can last up to weeks or months.
Chikungunya virus is a member of the Alphaviruses. The virus is transmitted by the bite of an infected Aedes mosquitoe and thus is an Arbovirus.
ViroStat has released 3 new monoclonal antibodies specific to the Chikungunya virus as well as 2 monoclonal antibodies that are Alphavirus group specific.

To download the data sheet for these NEW Antibodies and to obtain pricing, go to the ViroStat website at www.virostat-inc.com or call 207-856-6620

New BTXpress High Performance Electroporation Buffer

BTXpress High Performance Electroporation Buffer Achieves Similar or Better Efficiencies to Amaxa Nucleofector™ Reagents
The BTXpress High Performance Electroporation Buffer was designed to increase and improve efficiencies and cell viabilities for transfection in any electroporation system. Recent transfection data in U937, BHK and cardiomyocytes cell lines demonstrates that when the BTXpress buffer is substituted for the Amaxa™ Solution V in the Amaxa Nucleofection™ system, similar or better transfection efficiencies and viabilities can be achieved with BTXpress High Performance Buffer.

BTXpress Buffer Transfection Efficiency vs. Amaxa Nucleofector Reagents: The human leukemic monocyte lymphoma cell line U937, BHK cells (baby hamster kidney) and mouse Cardiomyocytes were electroporated in parallel with a GFP reporter vector in the Amaxa Nucleofector System using BTXpress High Performance Buffer in comparison to the same cells transfected with Amaxa Solution V.

High Quality Reagents for Arthritis & Inflammation Research

AMSBIO has announced a pan European partnership with Chondrex Inc. to market their high quality arthritis and inflammation reagents to academics and pharmaceutical companies that do research in these fields.

The range includes a suite of high quality reagents such as highly purified cartilage collagen and collagen monoclonal antibodies to provide scientists with the necessary tools to study the pathogenesis as well as to develop and screen potential therapeutics for Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).  In addition, AMSBIO has also improved its capability to provide reagents and various assay kits for the investigation of other important inflammatory diseases such as nephritis and allergic asthma.

Multi species Collagen reactive antibodies are available that can be used in western blotting, immunostaining and for inducing Collagen Antibody-Induced Arthritis (CAIA).

Collagenases, members of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family, are involved in the physiological and pathological turnover of connective tissues. Collagenase production is significantly increased at the sites of inflammation due to the stimulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines. AMSBIO is now able to provide recombinant human MMP-8 and MMP-13, in addition to collagenase assay kits using FITC-labeled type I collagen and type II collagen, or a fluorogenic peptide as substrates.  The new AMSBIO arthritis & inflammation research reagent range also includes type I and type II collagen specially purified for antibody assay by ELISA.

Calculating the Stoppering Force Required for Pilot Freeze Dryer Vial Closure

SP Scientific, a world leader in freeze drying technology, has released an informative new technical brief, which discusses freeze dryer equipment and the considerations and alterations that may be required based on container-closure selection.

Today many vials are stoppered by freeze dryers at sub-atmospheric pressure, with or without an inert gas layer over the product.  As the internal vial environment is at a lower pressure than its surrounds, an improperly seated stopper can easily lead to the ambient atmosphere leaking into the stoppered vial.  This may lead to oxidation damage or re-absorption of moisture, decreasing product shelf life and quality.

As a supplier of Production and Research & Development freeze dryers for over 30 years, SP Scientific has encountered a wide spectrum of freeze dryer vial container-closure systems.  As dosages and containers have decreased in size, a growing number of freeze dryer systems are increasingly challenged to properly seat the stopper into the glass vial because this configuration typically requires more force per square inch than previously used container closure systems. In addition, SP Scientific has found that vials for R&D are not always processed as they are in a production environment and this may create a significant impediment to properly seating the stopper due to an incorrect processing of vials.

This new technical brief, downloadable from the SP Scientific website*, presents protocols and straightforward calculations to enable you to determine the force required for your freeze dryer to securely seat the stopper in the vial of your choice, while eliminating the use of excess pressure that may crush vials or warp shelf assemblies.

For further information please contact SP Scientific on telephone +1-845-255-5000 (+44-1473-240000 in Europe) or email Leslie.Mather@spscientific.com.
