Analytical Technology’s Hydrogen Peroxide Gas Sensors Selected by Bioquell to Eradicate Hospital ‘Superbugs’
Specialist electrochemical sensor manufacturer Analytical Technology Inc. has announced that its electrochemical hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) gas sensors have been chosen by Bioquell to form part of its hydrogen peroxide vapour (HPV) bio-decontamination system, the Bioquell Q-10. The system effectively and safely bio-decontaminates rooms, equipment and electronic devices in hospital environments, eradicating problematic bacteria, fungi and viruses. The Bioquell Q-10 is a portable HPV system which uses H2O2 vapour to disinfect potentially contaminated areas in the fight against ‘superbugs’. Analytical Technology’s electrochemical gas sensors are fundamental to help optimise the HPV concentration to achieve surface sterilisation in the target area during the bio-decontamination process and for ensuring Bioquell’s Q-10 system has returned the target area to a safe HPV level prior to re-entry.
Germs or ‘superbugs’ can be easily spread in hospitals through human contact and on inanimate surfaces like telephone receivers and blood pressure cuffs. Every year, seven per cent of hospital patients contract a healthcare associated infection, making the eradication of ‘superbugs’ in the healthcare environment extremely important to patient safety.
Bioquell’s system, which integrates Analytical Technology’s electrochemical gas sensor technology, provides safe and repeatable sterilisation of hospital environments making HPV an effective replacement to traditional decontaminants such as formaldehyde, which has been banned for use in a number of European countries due to its carcinogenic nature. One of the benefits of this new treatment is that it can be safely used on sensitive equipment and electronics that are incompatible with chlorine-based products such as bleach. Moreover, the process is 'residue-free', breaking down to water vapour and oxygen, representing an extremely environmentally friendly biocide and leaving no residual odour. As a result, Bioquell’s system can be used on a daily basis in fully functioning hospitals to decontaminate patient rooms and other units in less than two hours depending on the room size, materials and starting environmental conditions.
Due to the commercial constraints on the healthcare industry, Bioquell worked together with Analytical Technology to integrate a replaceable sensor into the Bioquell Q-10, removing the need for more expensive sensors that require regular checks and maintenance. They also developed a unique protocol for calibrating the sensors using H2O2, giving Bioquell a huge technical advantage over other solution providers.
Oliver Cumberlege, Head of Research and Development at Bioquell, comments: “Bioquell was looking for a cost effective H2O2 measurement cell to integrate into our sensor package. Working with Analytical Technology allowed us to add features to increase its sensitivity and response time and develop a package to a price whereby it is more cost-effective to replace the complete unit rather than re-calibrate”.
Since its development, Bioquell’s HPV system containing the Analytical Technology electrochemical H2O2 sensor has been adopted by the NHS in the UK and used across the globe in many hospitals to date.

NEW Quick-Processing Humidity Test Chamber

Methods for Evaluating Lyophilized Product

Students win award for plant biosensors work
A team of 10 students from the University of Nevada, Reno received a silver medal at the International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition (iGem) in November for their work on plant biosensors.
The event is the premiere undergraduate synthetic biology competition and this is the second team from Nevada to participate in the 6-year-old competition, which includes schools, such as Harvard, Stanford, MIT and UC-Berkeley.

New Downflow Workstations

Natural Product Sample Preparation Web Page
Genevac has announced a new web page (www.genevac.com/naturalproducts) that brings together the latest technological innovations, applications advances and references for evaporation and sample concentration techniques relating to natural products research.
Genevac evaporator systems are also widely used by researchers seeking to extract functional molecules from natural sources. Typically investigations involve a primary solvent extraction of natural products that result in a large volume of crude extract. The crude extract is then often concentrated before being fractionated to isolate each component. The time consuming concentration task has been revolutionised by the unique large volume parallel processing capabilities of the ROCKET evaporator. The process of natural product fractionation typically produces many samples from a single extract. These samples need then to be evaporated before storage or analysis. Automated Sample Preparation of Peptides Designated for MALDI
A new application note from Agilent Automation Solutions describes a protocol for automated sample preparation and MALDI spotting developed with the protein analytics group of Dr. Lottspeich at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried, Germany.
The new protocol automates the sample preparation steps (cleansing and desalting) of peptides designated for mass spectrometry and the subsequent spotting onto a MALDI target plate using the Agilent Bravo Automated Liquid Handling Platform and C18 filled VeloTips from Glygen.
In order to get high quality peptide mass fingerprints in MALDI mass spectrometry, peptides must be concentrated and cleansed from impurities of previous steps. In particular, salts and buffer components originating from the protein digests should be removed. There are several manual cleansing tools available. All are based on various chromatography media and require multiple aspiration/dispensing or mixing steps. While manual sample handling remains a tedious procedure and extremely difficult to standardize, automation of the routine has never been truly feasible on any automation platform due to several technical limitations.
In the application note the authors compare automated sample preparation for MALDI-MS analysis on the Agilent Bravo Automated Liquid Handling Platform with a traditional manual cleansing process using Millipore ZipTips. A protocol for the binding, washing, elution, and direct spotting onto MALDI targets was created using Agilent VWorks Automation Control software is described which can be adapted to various MALDI target plates, labware, and pipetting tasks. Results show that peptide mass fingerprints produced by the automatic workflow performed equally well or better than the manual process regarding signal intensity and protein sequence coverage. As an additional benefit, the whole process is carried out in a reproducible and timesaving manner. The outcome of the experimentation shows that the automatic workup results in a better sequence coverage and Mascot score than both the tested manual workups.
The authors conclude that the Bravo Automated Liquid Handling Platform has been proven to be an effective tool for fully automated sample preparation with C18 VeloTips and subsequent MALDI target spotting processes.

Efficient & Reliable Automated Filling of 2-Compartment Petri Dishes
Using a MEDIAJET vario Automatic Media Preparation System from INTEGRA - leading Danish healthcare provider - Herlev Hospital has drastically increased the efficiency and reliability of preparing its 2-compartment agar plates.

NEW C100A Variable Speed Controller
The NEW C100A Variable Speed Controller from Fluid Metering, Inc. provides an ideal control interface for FMI’s Variable Speed Pumps.
The C100A features both manual speed adjustment using a front panel mounted rotary dial, as well as electronic speed control via a 4-20mA signal from an external source (sensor, flow meter, analyzer, process controller.. etc).
The C100A features include IR compensation, current limiting circuit, minimum and maximum speed adjustment, which are all factory preset to best meet specific application parameters. Computer Controlled Generator for PPT Gas Standards
The FlexStream™/SD Automated Permeation System dynamically blends parts-per-trillion (ppt) gas standards directly from pure analytes. The first dilution stage combines the flow of analyte vapor from a Trace Source™ permeation tube with a precisely controlled dilution gas flow to form a parts-per-billion (ppb) concentration primary mixture. In the second stage an aliquot of the primary mixture is further diluted to form the ppt mixture. Permeation tube parameters and concentration requirements are entered into the system through a front panel touch screen. The FlexStream™ computer controls dilution and aliquot flows to create the required mixture using the lowest total flow of dilution gas. Trace Source™ permeation tubes are available for over 500 compounds.
Common challenges including storage instability of ppt standards are circumvented. For most compounds, ppt and even ppb gas standards are not stable in storage. The FlexStream™ avoids this problem by dynamically blending flowing mixtures for immediate use. But for ppt mixtures typical direct blending requires very high dilution flow and analyte flow that is too low for accurate measurement even using permeation tubes. By incorporating two integrated, automated dilution stages the FlexStream™/SD easily blends single digit ppt mixtures using standard permeation tubes and total dilution flow of 10 l/min or less.

Diesel – in recent times also biodiesel – are fuels for combustion engines, which operate according to the process of auto ignition, discovered from Rudolf Diesel in 1892. Due to the favourable efficiency and the low fuel consumption diesel engines are used in cars, trucks, ships, locomotives or electric generators.
Diesel, bio-synthesized from plants, is called biodiesel. It is determined by diverse analytical methods according to DIN EN 14214 / ASTM D 6751. Below, gas chromatographic determinations of methanol, glycerol and glycerides, as well as fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) are presented.
