Trace Moisture Standards in Reactive Gases


Span Pac™ H2O-R Moisture Standards Generators create known calibration standards of trace moisture in reactive gases such as chlorine and HCL. These systems use Trace Source™ permeation tubes to dynamically add a known amount of water vapor to a flow of dried reactive matrix gas. 

Concentrations from < 10ppb to over 100ppm are possible by selecting suitable permeation tubes. At any concentration level, multi-point calibrations over a 400:1 range are easily achieved.

The Span Pac™ H2O-R method is based on the standard additions technique.  A small flow of dry inert gas flows over the Trace Source™ permeation tube to create a base moisture standard.  A variable portion of the base mixture is added to a flow of the reactive gas to form the calibration standard.  Calibration is based on the change in concentration due to addition of moisture from the Trace Source™ permeation tube. This method compensates for residual moisture in the dry matrix gas.  Mixture concentrations are traceable to NIST through physical standards.

Applications include on site moisture monitor calibration and production of controlled atmosphere for catalysis studies, corrosion rate studies and filter capacity tests.

AMSBIO has announced, as of 31st March 2011, the opening of a new North American subsidiary company - AMSBIO LLC**.

Thermo Fisher Scientific Develops New Method for High Purity Aluminum Analysis Using Glow Discharge Mass Spectrometry

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, has announced the availability of a new application note that describes how to use the unique capabilities of the Thermo Scientific ELEMENT GD glow discharge mass spectrometer to accurately and efficiently characterize high purity aluminum. The ELEMENT GD is a powerful and sensitive tool that precisely determines ultra-trace impurities in solid samples with minimal sample preparation, which lowers the risk of contamination. The new application note, entitled “High Purity Aluminum Analysis by Glow Discharge Mass Spectrometry” is available to download free-of-charge via http://www.thermoscientific.com/aluminium

Aluminum of 5N or 6N grade, especially with very low alpha emitters (U, Th) content, is widely used in specialty electronic and chemical applications. Performing analytical characterization of 5N or higher aluminum is challenging, however, since very low detection limits are required for the majority of elements. Compared to other metals, aluminum requires a high discharge current to achieve matrix signals on the order of 1010 cps in medium resolution. Such a level is necessary to achieve sub-ppb detection limits during analyses. The Thermo Scientific ELEMENT GD effectively addresses these challenges, enabling analysts to routinely achieve ultra-low detection limits directly in aluminum, even below parts per billion. Featuring a high-powered DC glow-discharge source, the system is designed to ensure stable discharge conditions throughout the analytical cycle.

Experimental results demonstrate that, owing to its extreme sensitivity, the Thermo Scientific ELEMENT GD can accurately specify impurities in aluminium at concentrations less than 1 ppb. Equipped with a fast-flow DC glow-discharge source, the system provides high sputter rates and sensitivity. In addition, the sector field mass analyzer used in the system provides high mass accuracy and precision, providing highly efficient measurement of the elements of interest. Another key advantage is that sample throughput is approximately three samples per hour for the determination of 70 elements at concentrations close to the detection limit. This throughput is about five times faster than that achieved with previously available GD-MS instrumentation.

The new application note provides a detailed overview of the analytical process followed in order to characterize aluminum using the ELEMENT GD, including sample preparation, instrument settings, calibration conditions and method development.

Pulse Discharge Detector

VICI’s Pulsed Discharge helium ionization Detector (PDD) extends the detection   capabilities of the popular Agilent 6890 and new 7890 GCs.  The basic operating mode of the PDD can replace virtually any of the detectors currently used by GC manufacturers.

Pulsed discharge detector Model D-3 is designed for plug-and-play installation on Agilent GCs, with models available for the 6890 and 7890. The D-3 is optimized for trace level work in the helium photoionization mode, and utilizes the electronics and power supply of the host GC. The system includes detector cell, pulser, and FID board, plus standard and mini helium purifiers to provide the best possible sensitivity.  It is suitable for use with columns from 50 micron capillaries to 1/8” packed.

The PDD is non-radioactive, non-destructive, highly sensitive and universal.  Response is linear over a wide range, and MDQs for most compounds are in the low ppb range.  With no open flame, no hydrogen requirement and close-to-true-mass response, the PDD is the ideal upgrade for FIDs in petrochemical environments.  When the helium discharge gas is doped with a suitable noble gas, the detector functions as a lampless, windowless photoionization detector.

Sulfonated lignins, used as dispersants in agrochemical formulations, have been characterized by hyphenation of ion-pair RPLC and thermally assisted hydrolysis and methylation-GC-MC (THM-GC-MS). The chemical structure of a series of selected lignins was evaluated, both in terms of overall composition and in terms of composition as a function of molecular size. Some sulfonated lignins give rise to unstable formulations. In the compositional analysis, these samples were found to yield additional fragments. A newly developed comprehensive method made it possible to monitor the occurrence of these fragments as a function of molecular size. In addition to differences in the molecular size between "good" and "bad" batches, clear differences in chemical composition were established.

Rapid Freezing of Tissue Samples

New 96-Channel Handheld Electronic Pipette

New Software Driver for Analect FTIR spectrometers

Symbion Systems, Inc., a leader in providing analytical instrument control, analysis, and connectivity software,  today announced the release of its SII-AN03 Third Generation Driver for the Applied Instrument Technology’s Analect FTIR spectrometers. The new driver integrates all of the functions of the Analect instruments into the Symbion-DX and RX analytical instrument software suites, providing a comprehensive capability for both laboratory development and on-line chemical process monitoring. The availability of the full range of Symbion functionality broadens the already substantial capability of the Analect FTIR spectrometers by allowing them to operate as autonomous analytical systems provided with complete sample system control, database storage - including store and forward capability - and integral chemometric modeling and prediction.

Symbion-DX and RX provide standardized platforms for controlling a wide range of spectrometers and other analytical instruments. In short, Symbion-DX and RX streamline the development of comprehensive analytical methods encompassing instrument and sample system control, data analysis, process trending, database archiving, and reporting to enterprise-wide data systems. Fluidigm Access Array Technology Helps Identify Mutations in Leukemia

Fluidigm has announced that MLL Munich Leukemia Laboratory (http://www.mll.com/) has used the company's Access Array™ technology to help  it uncover mutations in over 80 percent of chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) patients, providing new insights into the molecular heterogeneity of the disease. MLL researchers applied the unique properties of the Fluidigm Access Array System to prepare the samples and barcode the amplicons for next-generation deep-sequencing using 454 sequencing technology.

In a Letter to the Editor entitled "Molecular profiling of chronic myelomonocytic leukemia reveals diverse mutations in >80% of patients with TET2 and EZH2 being of high prognostic relevance" published in the February 22, 2011 issue of Nature LEUKEMIA (www.nature.com/leu) magazine, researchers found mutations in 81.5 percent of CMML patients providing new insights into the molecular heterogeneity of leukemia.

Oxford Instruments system sales into European LED manufacturing

As the demand for LED lighting increases, Oxford Instruments Plasma Technology is playing an increasingly important role in the manufacture of high brightness LEDs. Now, one of the leaders in LED manufacture, the Optogan Group, based in Landshut, Germany, has placed a multi-system order for Oxford Instruments’ etch and deposition systems. These include PlasmaPro™ System133 ICP and PlasmaPro 800Plus RIE etch systems, and a PlasmaPro 800Plus deposition system.

The PlasmaPro System133 process tool offers up to 27 x 2” batch etch capability for GaN on Sapphire wafers, while the PlasmaPro 800Plus tools are a flexible solution for plasma etching and deposition processes on large wafer batches of up to 43 x 2” wafers, in a compact footprint, open-loading system.

The Optogan Group develops and produces HB LEDs for global applications including Solid State Lighting, and has ordered the systems for installation at its high volume production manufacturing line in Landshut.
