Oak Ridge National Laboratory reinforces rules over political activities

Oak Ridge National Laboratory has stepped up its ethics training after the Department of Energy investigated allegations of improper political activities at ORNL and found evidence to substantiate at least one of the concerns.
"While most of the allegations could not be substantiated, the investigation found that some conversations about fundraising had occurred in the workplace, which was simply inappropriate," DOE spokesman John Shewairy said in an e-mail response to questions. "Department of Energy employees and contractors are expected to adhere to strict standards of ethical conduct and are not allowed to engage in political campaigning on the job or in the workplace. Because the department takes these issues so seriously, we initiated a prompt investigation of the allegations made in this case."
Shewairy said he could not discuss the allegations or details of the report.
He said DOE turned over the results of the investigation to UT-Battelle, the contractor that manages the agency's largest science research laboratory.
"While we cannot comment on personnel matters, UT-Battelle has taken action to correct the situation and to prevent this type of activity from happening in the future," he said.
