The American Microchemical Society (AMS) is pleased to announce the recipient of the prestigious 2011 A.A. Benedetti-Pichler Award is Dr. Sergio Caroli.
The award has been presented annually since 1966 (except 1972) to a scientist who has made significant and outstanding contributions to microchemistry in its broadest sense.
After 42 years of continued service, on July 2010 Sergio retired from the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (National Institute of Health, ISS) where he was one of the Research Directors. He gained a PhD in chemistry from the University of Rome in 1968 and soon afterwards a permanent member of the staff of the ISS. His research fields are mainly focused on the role of elements in health and environmental problems, the development of spectroanalytical methodologies for the quantification of elements, the development of reference values for elements in biological materials and the preparation of reference materials for use in the life sciences as well as the implementation of quality systems, in particular as regards the Good Laboratory Practice Principles. Over the period 1993 - 2004 he was Director of one of the four Community Reference Laboratories for Residues and Contaminants in food of animal origin established by the European Union. He received in 1988 from the Hungarian Government the highest scientific award (Magyar Népköztársaság Csillagrendje) for special merits in promoting technical and scientific cooperation between Italy and Hungary. In May 2000 he was awarded the title of Doctor et Professor honoris causa by the L. Eötvös University of Budapest. In the early 1990’s he was appointed Knight of the Italian Republic and Officer of the Italian Republic.

He is the author of about 400 papers and editor and co‑author of seven books (Standard Electrode Potentials, Improved Hollow Cathode Lamps, Applications of Zeeman Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, Speciation in Bioinorganic Chemistry, Environmental Contamination in Antarctica; The Determination of Chemical Elements in Food: Applications for Atomic and Mass Spectrometry, and Analytical Techniques for Clinical Chemistry: Methods and Applications, in press). In his laboratory many doctoral dissertations were prepared until recently.
His major commitments (past and/or present) are as follows: promoter and supervisor of one of the official scientific cooperation programmes between Italy and Hungary, within the framework of which the series of biennial bilateral Symposia on Spectrochemistry (now in its fourteenth edition) has been undertaken; Member of the Italian Monitoring Authority for GLP Compliance; Senior Inspector of the National Inspectorate for the evaluation of the compliance of national testing laboratories with the principles of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) (until 2010); official Italian delegate in the Working Group on GLP of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) (until 2010); promoter, organizer and chairman of the annual Italian Training Course for GLP Inspectors (now in its fifteenth edition); a participant in several projects on methodological developments promoted by the Institute of Reference Materials and Measurements of the Joint Research Centre (European Commission) (until 2010); scientific supervisor of several national monitoring campaigns for the assessment of reference values of elements in ecosystems and human organs; director of several national and international research projects; a member of the National Committee for Research in Antarctica (from 1991 through 2002); coordinator of one of the projects of the Programme of the Italian Ministry of Defense on the Monitoring of Exposure to Depleted Uranium (until 2011); a member of the Editorial Board of several international and national scientific journals; Director of University Masters and Training Courses on the implementation of quality systems.
The award will be presented at a symposium in his honor at the Eastern Analytical Symposium (EAS) on November 14-17, 2011 in Somerset, New Jersey.
