Chemically selective chemisorbents are needed to monitor natural and engineered waters for anthropogenic releases of stable and radioactive contaminants. Here, a number of individual and mixtures of chemisorbents were investigated for their ability to extract select fission and activation product elements from marine and coastal waters, including Co, Zr, Ru, Ag, Te, Sb, Ba, Cs, Ce, Eu, Pa, Np, and Th. Conventional manganese oxide and cyanoferrate sorbents, including commercially available Anfezh and potassium hexacyanocobalt(II) ferrate(II) (KCFC), were tested along with novel nano-structured surfaces (known as Self Assembled Monolayers on Mesoporous Supports or SAMMS) functionalized with a variety of moieties including...

As a powerful method for exploratory data analysis, projection pursuit (PP) often outperforms principal component analysis (PCA) to discover important data structure. PP was proposed in 1970's but has not been widely used in chemistry largely because of the difficulty in the optimization of projection indices. In this work, new algorithms, referred as “quasi-power methods”, are proposed to optimize kurtosis as a projection index. The new algorithms are simple, fast, and stable, which makes the search for the global optimum more efficient in the presence of multiple local optima. Maximization of kurtosis is helpful in the detection of outliers, while...
Highlights: ► Algorithms allow maximization or minimization of kurtosis ► Adaptable to univariate or multivariate kurtosis ► Fast and simple iterative procedure based on the power method ► Improved class separation demonstrated for three experimental data sets

The aim of this paper is to show how it is possible to extract analytical information from images acquired with a flatbed scanner and make use of this information for real time control of a nickel plating process. Digital images of plated steel sheets in a nickel bath are used to follow the process under degradation of specific additives. Dedicated software has been developed for making the obtained results accessible to process operators. This includes obtaining the RGB image, to select the red channel data exclusively, to calculate the histogram of the red channel data and to calculate the mean...
Highlights: ► This manuscript presents a complete methodology for online process control of the electroplating processes. ► The methodology uses flat-bed scanners for collecting pictures of the electroplated flat surfaces with Nickel. ► Dedicated software has been developed for making the obtained results accessible to process operators. ► The statistical parameters of control are the mean and the standard deviation of the color in the whole surface. ► The methodology can possibly be extended to other similar metal electroplating baths

Protein methylation is involved in dozens of biological processes and plays an important role in adjusting protein physicochemical properties, conformation and function. However, with the rapid increase of protein sequence entering into databanks, the gap between the number of known sequence and the number of known methylation annotation is widening rapidly. Therefore, it is vitally significant to develop a computational method for quick and accurate identification of methylation sites. In this study, a novel predictor (Methy_SVMIACO) based on support vector machine (SVM) and improved ant colony optimization algorithm (IACO) is developed to identify methylation sites. The IACO is utilized to...
