Previous publications investigated different data treatment strategies for quantification of volatile suspected allergens by GC/MS. This publication presents the validation results obtained on “ready to inject” samples under reproducibility conditions following inter-laboratory ring-testing. The approach is based on the monitoring of three selected ions per analyte using two different GC capillary columns. To aid the analysts a decisional tree is used for guidance during the interpretation of the analytical results. The method is evaluated using a fragrance oil concentrate spiked with all suspected allergens to mimic the difficulty of a real sample extract or perfume oil. At the concentrations of...
Highlights: ► The GC/MS quantitation of suspected allergens is validated thanks to ring test. ► The results are treated using a decisional tree or an automated data treatment. ► Both methods are linear, and the prediction intervals are given. ► From 10 to 100mg/kg, the mean bias of both methods is below 15%. ► The automated treatment performances are close to those of the decisional-tree.

It has been demonstrated that it is possible to extend the Total Pore Blocking (TBP)-method for the determination of the external porosity (ɛe) of packed bed columns from reversed-phase (RP) chromatography to normal-phase (NP) chromatography conditions by switching the nature of the blocking agent and the interstitial void flushing liquid, i.e., by using as a hydrophobic blocking agent (pure or buffered water at pH 3.0 or pH 7.0) and a hydrophobic flushing liquid (linear alkanes such as decane). Several parameters that might influence the accuracy of the method, such as the applicable range of flow rates and the meso-pore size...
Highlights: ► TPB method for normal phase ► Switch block and flush solvents ► Inject linear alkane

Free medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) can negatively influence the fermentation process and taste quality in alcoholic beverages. Ethyl hexanoate is important in providing a fruit-like flavour to drinks, particularly in Japanese sake. In this study, we developed a direct injection method for a gas chromatography–flame ionization detector following the semi-purification of chemical components, such as esters, alcohols and MCFAs in alcoholic beverages. Evaluation of MCFAs by this method gave a limit of detection on the order of sub-ppm and relative standard deviations less than 10% in standard solution. Good repeatability and recovery rates against MCFAs and ethyl hexanoate were also...
Highlights: ► We developed a direct injection method for a gas chromatography–flame ionization detector following the sample semi-purification. ► Esters, alcohols and medium-chain fatty acids in alcoholic beverages were successfully separated. ► Evaluation of the method resulted in good repeatability and recovery. ► We established quality control index based on quantification data. ► This method is ideal for routine analysis in the alcohol beverage industry.

Three ionic liquid (IL)-functionalized silica materials, imidazolium, N-methylimidazolium and 1-alkyl-3-(propyl-3-sulfonate) imidazolium, were synthesised and applied in solid-phase extraction (SPE) of organic acids, amines and aldehydes, which are important compound families in atmospheric aerosol particles. 1-Alkyl-3-(propyl-3-sulfonate) imidazolium-functionalized silica was tested as sorbent for SPE for the first time. The analytes were separated and detected by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). To confirm the results achieved by LC-MS, the acids were additionally determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The stability of the IL-functionalized silica materials was tested at low and high pH. The effect of the pH on the extraction was also informative...

Polymeric 1-vinyl-3-octylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate was synthesized in situ on stainless steel wire by surface radical chain-transfer polymerization and used as sensitive coatings in solid-phase microextraction. The outer surface of the stainless steel wire was firstly coated with microstructured silver layer via silver mirror reaction and then functionalized with self-assembled monolayers of 1,8-octanedithiol, which acted as chain transfer agent in the polymerization. Coupled to gas chromatography, extraction performance of the fiber was studied with both headspace and direct-immersion modes using benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX), phenols and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) as model analytes. In combination with the microstructured silver layer,...
Highlights: ► A novel polymeric 1-vinyl-3-octylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate-coated SPME fiber was synthesized in situ on stainless steel wire by surface radical chain-transfer polymerization. ► A microstructured silver layer was employed to functionalize the stainless steel wire with self-assembled dithiol. ► The fiber exhibited high extraction efficiency and excellent durability.
