The New LCMS Reality Show - Keeping Up with the Chromatography!
Now that column performance has increased, it is common to see complete HPLC separations done in under 60 seconds. Peak widths are now down in the sub-second range, and it is common to find peak widths in the 100 to 150 millisecond range. Manufacturers have responded by building faster UV and PDA detectors, but this has been more difficult for LCMS detectors, the detector of choice for synthesis and drug discovery because of robustness and ease of operation.
However, with new approaches to the design and operation of quadrupole mass analyzers, it is now possible to perform LCMS scans in sub-second HPLC peaks, even with dual polarity measurements, and still have enough scans across the peaks to have meaningful data and quantitation. LCMS results will be shown for chromatographic peaks in the sub 200 millisecond range.
